Works On Paper
Visiting Artists 2024-2025
Along with our local and regional workshop instructors, we invite artists from outside our area to join us at Rice Lake Arts.

Sarah Davidson, Canadian born and trained artist, will join us from her studio in Brooklyn, NY to share her passion for nature and artistic vision through a mixed media workshop next summer.

Connecting with Nature through Observational Drawing
Carefully observing the world through drawing has many positive impacts for the individual and our relationship to the natural world. If you enjoy drawing, doodling and mark-making and want to hone your skills and develop new approaches to representational image-making, this 2 day workshop is for you. In this workshop Miriam will share an an approach to drawing that is organic and personal, but still makes use of classical drawing techniques such as contour, value and tone. David Armstrong, accomplished printmaker and bookmaker, joins us from his home in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Recently retired from his teaching role at Nova Scotia School of Art & Design, David has extensive background in a range of visual media, specializing in print, book and papermaking. As well, he is an expert in bushcraft and sustainable building practices; he currently runs his own creative endeavour Ember Arts (www.emberarts.ca) on his spectacular 70 acre property in Cape Breton, NS. Check out his website and join us for his workshop this summer at Rice Lake Arts.
Sarah Davidson works primarily between drawing and painting to create compositions in which shadowy, biomorphic figures and delicate, foliated fragments mingle. Both the eye and the mind work towards the known–animals, plants, brush marks, lines–but are caught in a space of undoing. A question floats among the forms: who’s seeing who, and how?
Sarah Davidson (they/them, b.1989, Canada) lives and works in New York, NY. Recent solo exhibitions include NARS Foundation, New York, NY (2023), Wil Aballe Art Projects, Vancouver, BC (2022), Feuilleton, Los Angeles, CA (2021), and Erin Stump Projects, Toronto, ON (2019).

Miriam Davidson is an art educator, with many years of experience teaching drawing practice in schools, university and community-based settings. Her approach encourages slow, careful observation working to connect your eye, your hand, and your sense of touch to sensitively and accurately depict what you see. She creates a supportive, low stress learning environment, that respects your individual approach to drawing.
