Stone & Wood Carving
Stone Carving
Have you ever wondered how stone sculptures are made? Are you interested in creating art in three dimensions? Do you enjoy working with your hands in an outdoor environment? Then our direct stone carving workshops are for you.
Direct stone carving refers to a method that employs hand tools, with the sculptor cutting directly into the stone or wood, without the use of mechanical aids, models, plaster casts or detailed plans. This makes for a more natural approach with results that are authentic, unique and personal.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience stone carving, enrolling in any of these workshops will provide you with an individualized learning experience that meets your goals.

3 Day Stone Carving Workshop
If you are a complete novice or have some basic experience carving stone, this 3-Day workshop is for you!
In this workshop we will provide the instruction required for you to complete a carving from raw stone to polished sculpture. You will begin by selecting a piece of stone appropriate for the timeframe and your goals. We have a good supply of Zimbabwean stone in a variety of sizes and shapes available for purchase on the first day of the workshop at $4/lb. Workable by hand, vibrant in colour when polished, this stone is highly sought after by sculptors worldwide.
Once you have selected your stone, you will be guided through the carving process step-by-step, beginning with creating a base for your piece and roughing in your design using a hammer and a point tool. You will continue to define your sculpture with chisels, rasps, files and sandpaper moving from rough to refined grits to create a very smooth surface that reveals the colour and beauty of your stone.
All carving tools, protective gear (goggles/gloves, dust masks, sandbags) and finishing materials are provided.
